This book is a preamble, and an enticement.
I?m going to list a number of suppositions. Read each one aloud. You can decide the truth of each on your own. Afterwards, I?ll discuss them in detail.

1. I am happy just the way I am.
2. Every one of my relationships is exactly where I want it to be.
3. Sometimes this world makes no sense to me.
4. I believe there is something more to life than is obvious, but can?t quite put my finger on what it is.
5. I just don?t understand how so many people can be so narrow-minded.
6. Sometimes I don?t even know what’s upsetting me.
7. Life is inherently unfair.
8. I believe in forms of divination such as tarot cards.
9. I do not believe in forms of divination such as tarot cards.
10. Life is what it is. I can?t change it.

The truth of the above statements will be different for each person. That said, there is much common experience we share as human beings. Let’s take the above statements one at a time.

I am happy just the way I am.

I believe most people would consider this statement false. Are we really all we can be? How do you judge your successes? Your failures? Do you feel you could be better than you are? If not, do you feel that you have grown as much as you can? That you have reached the end of growth for this lifetime?

Every one of my relationships is exactly where I want it to be.

It is hard for me to conceive of a human being who is exactly where they want to be in every relationship. Interaction between people is one of the major causes of emotional pain and suffering in the world today. The inability to communicate with family, friends, spouses, lovers and coworkers is one thing that unites us as human beings. Because the problem is so pervasive, it might be difficult to believe there’s a way to change it. Could there be a basic understanding you?re lacking to help you comprehend why certain relationships seem destined to cause you grief?

Sometimes this world makes no sense to me.

If the world makes sense to you all the time, write a book. There are many people out there, myself included, who would buy it. I don?t find that the world always makes sense, but I think I know why that is, which puts me ahead of the game.
While no one can know everything, I?m willing to wager you know more than you think?or allow?yourself to know. Don?t believe me? That’s okay. Your belief is not required to get more out of your life.

I believe there is something more to life than is obvious, but can?t quite put my finger on what it is.

Have you ever thought you saw something out of the corner of your eye, only to find nothing there when you turned to see what it was? I feel like that all the time. I always feel like I?m on the edge of greater understanding. Sometimes I think that if I could make one tiny mental connection, it would all fall into place. Sometimes that even happens. It happened for me shortly before I wrote the book, The Cup and the Bucket: A Workbook for Life. I?m not claiming I have the one, ultimate, complete truth. But I do believe I caught a glimpse of something most people have yet to see. I?ve talked to enough people to prove the point to me, whether you accept it or not.

I just don?t understand how so many people can be so narrow-minded.

It often amazes me the depths to which humanity can sink. Then again, there is plenty of evidence we can soar as well. I only wish there were as many people soaring, as sinking. I?m pretty sure I?m not alone in that wish. Wouldn?t it be great if there was a reason, a real and compelling reason, why people are so intolerant? Bigoted? Arrogant? Greedy? Selfish? Hostile? Self-centered?
Recent elections around the world have shown how polarized our belief systems have become. We can?t all be right...can we? I think the answer will surprise you.

Sometimes I don?t even know what is upsetting me.

I think this happens to all of us. We put it down to many things; pressure at work, low blood sugar, not enough sleep, monthly cycles, astrology, biorhythms, change of diet, being oversensitive, or even chronic depression.
Does it seem to you that a disproportionately large percentage of the population suffers from chronic depression, or bursts of irrational rage? Why do you suppose that is? Does life have to be that way?

Life is inherently unfair.

All my life, I?ve been told life isn?t fair. My father said it. My mother said it. Teachers have said it. Friends have said it. How do they know? Where, exactly, does that little tidbit come from? Are they all right?
I?m not so sure. Might there not be mechanisms at work we have no idea about? Are there really simple answers to such complex questions?
Not that I know of. But I do have a few ideas that might explain at least some of the world’s injustice. A few people have even told me they make sense.

I believe in forms of divination such as tarot cards.

Why do the tarot cards work? How do they work? How do you read them? Are there other uses for the tarot besides divining the future? Is divining the future truly possible? If human beings have free will, how can the tarot predict something that hasn?t yet occurred? Wouldn?t that imply predestiny?
I am a big believer in free will. I think we all have free will, which doesn?t mean anything we attempt will be successful, because other people have free will as well, and their decisions might hinder our own. Yet more, I believe there are reasons certain things happen that have nothing at all to do with our conscious will, or the will of others. I also believe without understanding those causal elements, you can?t possibly understand the world around you.
Wouldn?t it be great to understand at least part of why things happen the way they do?

I do not believe in forms of divination such as tarot cards.

I?m glad you don?t believe in divination. I don?t think an unfounded belief is a good thing. My question to you is simple... do you have an open mind about the tarot? It is my contention that your belief in a thing has nothing to do with its truth. People once believed the Earth was flat and that the Sun revolved around it. Do me the courtesy of suspending your doubt, until you see what I have to say.
For the record, I started reading tarot cards to disprove them. When I found I couldn?t, I was dissatisfied. Things don?t work without some kind of mechanism. Is there such a mechanism giving rationale to something as esoteric as the tarot?
If you were to see proof of the veracity of the tarot with your own eyes, would you still not believe?
What if there was another purpose for the cards that had nothing at all to do with tarot reading, or divination? What if the cards had spiritual lessons hidden within them, almost like a cosmic comic book? Even without doing a single tarot reading, I can show you something about the tarot you?ve never suspected.

Life is what it is. I can?t change it.

I can?t speak for everyone, only myself. I can say with some degree of confidence I have changed my life (in addition to changing my job, my relationships and the hemisphere I live in). Can everyone change their lives? Does a path choose those who walk upon it?
Why do I always answer a question with another question?
Good question. The answer is simple. I?d rather have you reach your own conclusion than try to force one on you.
