Nixie And The Forbidden Heroes Of The New World (Excerpt)

The Vision

It always starts the same.

I see myself standing on top a destroyed building, watching the ruined city's skyline. Black smoke coils into the air. Thick, hazy orange clouds gloom over the abandoned metropolis. No sign of life. No sign of hope. Everything is gone - victim to nuclear fallout.

What happened? I ask every single time.

That's when the missiles flash overhead and I drop to the floor, screaming. Jets fly by, opening fire on the survivors below. I'm always happy to see others alive. Too bad it never lasts for long. They fight their hardest. They give it all they have, but in the end? They always die. I stand petrified from the horror unfolding in front of me. I want to help, but I never can. I'm always forced to watch them burn.

In the distance, giant, burning beasts; each the size of two skyscrapers - rise from the ground. Their fiery eyes tell me only one thing: death. They march toward me. The earth trembles. I tremble. Winged insect-men hop out of the jets and join them. They fly to me and arrive before the giants do.

They always kneel and ask.

"What will you have us do?"

And I always have a panic attack at that moment. The giants arrive, surround me and kneel. Survivors from below cry out and ask me for mercy. I want to give it, but I can't. The giants and the insects turn their attention on the pests. I plead and ask them to stop. They never listen. They open fire and slaughter the survivors. That's when I hold my head and scream.

And the dream fades away...
