From inside the flap

Conrad is a Twenty Eight year old spy in Europe in the year 2128. He works for a government that he suspects may have played a part in his death. Like all spies, he was resurrected and has no choice but to serve those who resurrected him, as he is bound to the medication that they supply which stops his body from rotting.

He is singled out to track down Kane, one of the Heads of a neighbouring sector. Targeting a fellow sector head is ordinarily political suicide. However Intel believes that Kane is somehow linked to the most wanted man in the world, the blight on freedom and more importantly Democracy… the infamous Persian Prince.

What follows is an action packed chase as Conrad goes from the hunter to the hunted. At the mercy of Political subterfuge and his forgotten, shady past, the world as he knows it begins to unravel and he must attempt to resist his conditioning in order to find the truth and fight for freedom for both himself and the world.

Arcadian Secret (Excerpt)

PROLOGUE

The year is 2128. The world has been divided into six sectors (S1- S6). Sector 1 (S1) is the old Oceania and much of East Asia. The border that divides S1 and S2 runs between India and Pakistan and veers towards the east coast of the former Russia. S1 is heavily urbanised and like most of the other known sectors is devoted to industrial economics and technological advancement. There is small but increasingly powerful agricultural party.

S2 embraces much of what was the Middle East and Asia. In the east it borders with S1 and in the west it borders both S3 and S4. Its western border stretches through Slavic Russia and wraps around Turkey before retreating back to the southern ocean. S2 is called the Black sector as there is no reliance on its fellow sectors for trade and it has a complete media blackout. It is rumoured to have trading ties with S1.

S3 is a combination of Eastern and Western Europe with the S4 border stretching across the top of Africa and parts of S West Arabia. Both these sectors are heavily industrialised although S3 has a superior infrastructure. S3 and S4 are at odds with each other, both economically and religiously.

The final border splits the two American sectors, running along the bottom of Mexico. The northern half is S5 and the southern S6. S5 experienced an economic boom in the late 2000s but eventually exhausted its resources and like S4, became heavily polluted and overpopulated, leading to the great plague. Most of S5 sought sanctuary in S6 because of shared belief systems.

Each sector has elected three representatives for the World Council. In most cases these representatives take the form of the sector heads. They run the Information Agency, Security Agency and Control Central, in some sectors there is a fourth Agency which is solely concerned with religious affairs called the White Tunnel.

The World Council was established in 2075 after the three great catastrophes; the financial collapse (2050), the internet inquisition (2067-71) and the satellite wars (2030-75). The World Council was formed as a direct response to the satellite wars and was charged with maintaining peace between the sectors and preventing any more catastrophes from occurring. To maintain peace, the council decided that the citizens of the world had to give up several liberties. Martial law became common place in many of the sectors and speaking out against the governments was forcefully discouraged, curtailing free speech.

The punishments for any sector breaking the World Council Laws were severe, however, most sectors continued to bend the rules. One such trespass is the small but still extremely active world of spies. Espionage in the late 2000s was a deadly game of high tech wizardry and most of the spies were not consciously aware that they were spies.

The World Council, fearing that they may already be infiltrated with spies made an example of S5 by seizing control of government and holding free elections. The remaining sectors heeded the warning. While many of the sectors genuinely abandoned the idea of espionage, there were those that pursued newer, more subtle ways of infiltration.

Sector 3 used the experimental technology of human resurrection to recruit its spies. They selected individuals with no known relatives, orchestrated their death and then resurrected them with a physical and psychological dependence on the government. The payment for bringing them back to life was their unquestioning allegiance, their reward for good service was the medical assistance thought necessary to survive. These new generations of spies are called Ghosts.

The Ghosts were trained extensively in hand to hand combat. The drugs that they used to keep themselves alive had the added benefit of enhancing their bodies and minds. This meant that they had less dependence on the technologies than their predecessors and usually finished jobs with no collateral damage. They were taught to be human chameleons, and were able to blend and adapt to any circumstance. This is the story of one such spy, a man named Conrad.
