Does
Double Dragon Publishing charge any fees for publishing my work?
Is Double Dragon Publishing a "Vanity Press"? |
 |
No,
Double Dragon Publishing does not under any circumstances charge
its authors fees for the submission, editing, or cover art. The
only time that a fee is required is when an author purchases their
own paperback at 30% off retail. |
 |
If
my submission is accepted for publication will it also be automatically
released as a paperback? |
 |
No,
Double Dragon Publishing is essentially an eBook publisher with
annual sales of over 20,000 units. We have chosen to concentrate
on this new market and believe that a time will come when it will
be equal to the printed word. HOWEVER, we do occasionally release
existing titles in paperback if eBook sales warrant it. |
 |
What
type of compensation do I receive for my work? |
 |
As
an author you will receive 30% of all net sales on a six month
basis on all amounts greater than or equal to $25.00 USD. We have
chosen a six month cycle instead of the typical three month cycle
because of the amount of time and paperwork involved. In addition,
we generally do not receive statements and payment from our retailers
until 45 days after the end of each quarter. |
 |
Why
don't you give advances? |
 |
Quiet
simply, advances drain a SMALL company of resources that are
needed to run the business. When a larger, well established
publisher signs an author and gives them an advance they are
making a statement that they believe they will see a return
on investment equal or greater to the advance. This is one reason
that these larger publishers will only sign "bankable"
names or manuscripts with very formulated plots and characters.
As a small publisher we do not have the resources nor the desire
to follow the same formula. As a result, we are able to publish
manuscripts that may be different from the norm. This also allows
us to publish more titles per year then what would normally
be allowed (given the "pro-rated" advance scale).
|
 |
Will
my manuscript be edited? |
 |
Yes,
Double Dragon Publishing employs on a contractual basis a number
of editors and proof-readers depending on the annual work load.
We presently have 15 skilled editors working with our authors. |
 |
What
genres do you accept? |
 |
We're
generally open to anything but have found that 90% of our sales
come from Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Speculative Fiction.
We have also opened a new romance imprint called Dragon's
Heart Romance and will be accepting submissions
after August 1st, 2004. |
 |
Most
publishers offer "freebies". Do you have anything like
this? |
 |
We
offer the following free services to all authors:
- free
editing services by one of our editorial staff members
- free
cover design and artwork (remains the property of DDP)
- free
banner design for your book
- free
copies of all eBooks to be used for your own promotional efforts
- a
Double Dragon Authors Group (closed to the public) that gives
you to forum to share ideas and communicate with other authors.
|
 |
What
eBook Formats do you offer? |
 |
We
are currently publishing eBooks in Rocket-eBook, Hiebook, Adobe
PDF, MS-Reader, Mobipocket, iSilo, Franklin eBookMan, and Palm
Doc. Double Dragon Publishing will continue to evolve as new technologies
emerge in the area of the electronic book. |
 |
What
rights do you require when I sign a contract? |
 |
Double
Dragon Publishing only requires exclusive electronic rights
for eBook use ONLY. This means that you can shop
around the remaining rights. And if you happen to receive a movie
deal, we do not require a "cut" of your pie. We don't
feel that it is an honest practice to "grab" rights
that we do not intend to use. |
 |
How
long are your contracts? |
 |
We
require a term of 5 years, but will negotiate depending on your
needs. |
 |
Why
do you require a biography during the submission process? |
 |
The
biography and blurb for From Inside the Flap are needed
when we release a title. So in an effort to save time. We ask
for this information up front. |
 |
Why
must I follow your Submission Guidelines? |
 |
We
ask that you follow our submission guidelines in order to make
the process easier for our editing staff. We receive up to 30
submissions a month, and it helps make the process smoother if
everything is standardized. In addition, all our conversion software
is setup to recognize specific formats, headings and file types.
We cannot read a WordPerfect document for example. |
 |
I
see that you are a Canadian company, will I be paid in Canadian
dollars? |
 |
No,
all sales are in US dollars. As a result we will pay
out all royalties in US dollars even to our Canadian authors.
You will however, be responsible for the reporting of your own
income for tax purposes. |
